43. SB 1811 - Gallego Amendment
Adoption; May 20, 2011; RV # 1210; Journal Page 4523: 46 Yeas, 96 Nays, 1 Present-not-voting
YCT Nay. Amendment 47 would have created and funded a Legislative Fellows Program in which the Chancellors of each higher education system would appoint 20 students to work in the legislature, to be paid through taxpayer funds. Each session, YCT members work as employees and interns in the legislature and they earn these positions on their own merit. They earn a salary through existing legislative budgets, work for free, or receive funding through private fellowship programs. The program proposed by Amendment 47 would use taxpayer funds to reward those students who endear themselves to the higher education establishment and who would lobby on the systems’ behalf while working in the legislature.
