Passage to Engrossment; May 13, 2011; Journal Page 2293: 17 Yeas, 14 Nays

YCT Nay.  SB 1485 would have allowed school districts to equip their buses with exterior cameras to photograph cars that failed to obey the deployable “stop” signs on a bus at rest. These cameras would operate exactly as mo? bile versions of the red light cameras which exist in some parts of Texas. Penalties would be imposed by boards of trustees or school districts themselves in conjunction with a municipality. YCT opposes the use of cameras for traffic law enforcement.  Schools exist to educate Texas children, not to search for ways to collect revenue under the guise of increasing safety.
