20. SB 1581 - Ellis Amendment
Motion to Table; May 9, 2011; Journal Page 2122: 16 Yeas, 15 Nays
YCT Nay on Motion to Table. Amendment 11 would have repealed the mistitled policy of “tuition deregulation” at Texas universities unless the 83rd Texas Legislature took positive steps to retain the policy. YCT supports any measure aimed at repealing or diminishing tuition deregulation. YCT has opposed tuition deregulation from the beginning because we knew that any measure which takes the authority over fees out of the hands of elected officials and places it in the hands of unelected bureaucrats would ultimately empower government expansion. Tuition deregulation has been a disaster, leading to rapidly increasing tuition rates at Texas universities. This has happened because universities are government agencies which participate in a non?market environment in which customers are isolated from the effects of price by massive government subsidies.
