Passage; May 10, 2017; Journal Page 1806; 24 Yeas, 6 Nays, 1 Absent-excused

YCT Yea. With the growing number of charter schools in Texas, SB 1061 would have allowed their operators to hold more than one charter. The current law limits the number of charter schools Texas can have, thus hurting Texas students who need a different education model. With the supply of charter schools not meeting the demand in Texas, it is imperative that changes are made in the regulation of non-traditional schools. YCT believes that open-enrollment charter schools give parents and students more options in their education rather than having to enroll in the neighborhood, standardized public school.
